Couple ordered to stand trial accused of multiple allegations of child cruelty

The man and woman, aged 34 and 24 respectively, are jointly charged with five counts of child cruelty

A COUPLE is to stand trial accused of multiple allegations of child cruelty.

At Craigavon Magistrates Court, the man (34) and woman (24), who cannot be identified to protect their children, confirmed they understood the charges against them.

They are charged with five counts of child cruelty in that they “wilfully neglected” three boys and two girls on March 18 this year.

In addition, the female was charged with driving while disqualified.

Previous courts heard how the investigation began when police received a report of a road traffic collision on Brownlow Road, Craigavon.

Officers found an abandoned VW Sharan crashed into a hedge and witnesses said a man and woman fled the scene with a baby.

Later, other officers were called to a domestic incident where one child commented that "mummy had crashed the car so they had to walk home".

District Judge Bernie Kelly scheduled their arraignment for January 25.
