MID Ulster council has suspended an entertainment licence held by The Elk complex in Toomebridge while an investigation is held into overcrowding at a recent teen disco.

The council is investigating complaints made by parents about an event held at the venue on November 5.

The Irish News revealed that police received several complaints regarding crowds at the sold-out under-18s evening.

A parent also told this paper how her 13-year-old daughter feared she and two teen friends would be "crushed" at one point, and were pulled to safety by a security guard.

The Public Health Agency yesterday revealed that 800 people are self-isolating after being identified as close contacts of 170 positive and suspected Covid-19 cases linked to the event.

A spokesperson for Mid Ulster District Council said they had initially issued a prohibition notice to prevent the popular venue from hosting teen events, pending a safety review.

At a meeting of the council's environment committee on Tuesday evening, members agreed to suspend the venue's entertainment licence.

"The committee agreed to suspend the entertainment licence until such times as the terms of the prohibition notice are complied with," a spokesperson said.

"Those terms require the licensee to provide a revised event management plan which adequately addresses the issues which arose at the event held on 5 November 2021."
