Former RUC officer Brian Coulter

POLICE investigating the murder of a former RUC officer in Co Derry have carried out a search in connection with the probe.

It came as a man remained in police custody following the discovery of the body of Brian Coulter in Magherafelt on Monday.

Mr Coulter, believed to be aged in his early 60s, was found at a house at Sandy Braes.

No cause of death has yet been confirmed.

A man was later arrested on suspicion of murder.

A PSNI spokeswoman said: "Police are currently carrying out a search in relation to the ongoing investigation into the murder of 62-year-old Brian Coulter in Magherafelt on Monday October 18th".

Mr Coulter had served with the RUC in the 1980s, but after stepping down is understood to have struggled with alcohol abuse, which led to a series of court appearances over the years.

During a court hearing in June 2016, the ex-policeman admitted harassing two neighbours in January that year.
