A 24-year-old Irishman found dead in a swimming pool in Spain has been named as Gerard McMahon, from Killaloe in Co Clare.

Mr Mahon, a member of the Republic's Defence Forces, was a former footballer with Ogonnelloe GAA.

He is believed to have drowned in the pool on the Costa Del Sol on Friday while on a trip with friends.

A spokesman for Ogonnelloe GAA said it was shocked and saddened by the death.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his parents Pat and Carmel, his sister Bríd, and all the McMahon family at this extremely difficult time," he said.

The club said the McMahon family asked that all matches took place as normal over the weekend.

However, a minute's silence was observed before every game and no activity was allowed on club grounds at the weekend.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been confirmed.
