SIGHTS and sounds from across the globe were on display during a special celebration in west Belfast yesterday.

The West Belfast Diversity Festival brought together a range of people who have turned the area into home, including refugees and asylum seekers.

International music filled the air while a selection of food tempted the taste buds at the well attended event.

Donations from local shops and other organisations helped stage the event, which was put together by Paul Doherty of Foodstock - West Belfast Community Response along with I.assistni.

Mr Doherty, who is also an SDLP representative for west Belfast, said "families from all over the world have recently set up their homes in west Belfast.

"They add huge benefit to the community and our society is richer because of their presence," he said.

"Today's event was about celebrating the diversity of all the people who call west Belfast home, including our asylum seeker and refugee population."

Mr Doherty said the local community supported the event.

"I have also been heartened by how much the community has rallied around in support of this celebration which has been yet another demonstration of the generosity and welcoming spirit of our people,” he said.
