Four further Covid-related deaths were announced by the Department of Health yesterday, as well as 1,349 new cases.

In the past seven days, a total of 9,052 positive cases of the virus have been detected in the north.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been 256,332 positive cases confirmed.

The four latest deaths brings to 2,610 the number of people who have lost their lives since last March.

Yesterday, there were 331 Covid-19-positive people in hospital.

Of these 37 were in intensive care and 22 of these were ventilated.

Hospitals were 109 beds over capacity while there were 213 people awaiting admission to hospital.

Altnagelvin, Belfast City, Causeway, Royal Victoria, South West Acute and the Ulster hospitals were all operating at over capacity.

There were also 67 current outbreaks in care homes.

Meanwhile, according to the weekly figures from the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (Nisra), there has been a further fall in the number of Covid-related deaths.

In the week up to October 8, the virus was mentioned on the death certificates of 28 people - 20 fewer than the previous week.

It brings the total number of deaths registered by the agency to 3,501.

The Department of Health's total for the same date, based on a positive test result being recorded, is 2,585.

Nisra's figures are higher because it records mentions of the virus on death certificates, where it may or may not have been confirmed by way of a test.

According to the agency, 68 per cent of deaths have occurred in hospitals while 31.5 per cent have taken place in care homes.

People aged 75 and over account for about three-quarters of all Covid-19-related registered deaths.

In the Republic yesterday 1,914 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed.

There are 413 patients in hospital with the the virus, down two on the previous day.

There are 73 patients in intensive care, a rise of three.
