Four further deaths of patients who had previously tested positive for Covid-19 have been reported by the Department of Health.

It takes the total number of deaths since the pandemic began to 2,610.

Another 1,349 cases of the virus were recorded in the last 24-hour reporting period.

This morning there were 348 Covid-positive patients in hospital, of whom 37 were in intensive care. Of these, 22 are on ventilators.

The north's hospitals are over capacity by 109 beds.

To date 2,569,617 vaccines have been administered.

The figures were released after the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (Nisra) released data showing 3,512 coronavirus-linked deaths had occurred by October 8.

The Nisra figure is drawn from different data sources and is always higher than the department’s total as it provides a broader picture of the impact of Covid-19.

The department’s statistics focus primarily on hospital deaths and only include people who have tested positive for the virus.

Meanwhile, in the Republic a further 1,914 cases of Covid-19 have been notified.

This morning, there were 413 Covid-positive patients in hospital, of whom 73 were in ICU.
