POGUES frontman Shane MacGowan has suffered a recent accident which his wife said she feared was a "huge setback" to the 63-year-old singer's health.

In an Instagram post at the weekend, Victoria Mary Clarke, who married MacGowan in 2018, said:

"I have been taking a bit of an inward journey in the last few days...Shane had another accident and it seemed like a huge setback because he was doing really really well."

The former journalist-turned fashion designer did not elaborate but said the latest incident involving her husband left her feeling "angry and upset and frustrated with life".

The Fairytale of New York star, who has been confined to a wheelchair since breaking his pelvis in 2015, has suffered a number of health concerns over the past year.

Speaking of the latest incident, Ms Clarke added: "If you really really want to feel at peace in your life you have to be able to absorb the punches."

It comes as a new biography exploring MacGowan's turbulent life and his rise as the face of the group famous for establishing the 'Celtic punk' genre.

'Furious Devotion: The Authorised Story of Shane MacGowan' was penned in collaboration with Norfolk writer Richard Balls. Speaking of the new book on one of his musical heroes, the author said: "I’ve included the darker side of his life, but also shown the respect that he’s held in. The Ivor Novello Award for songwriting, the lifetime achievement award from the National Concert Hall, the Late Late Show tribute show to him.

"He’s so revered and I hope that the book adds to that recognition."
