Teenage girl sexually assaulted at Ormeau Park event

Police are appealing for information

POLICE in south Belfast are appealing for information after a teenage girl was sexually assaulted at a concert in Ormeau Park.

A PSNI spokesperson said the incident occurred at around 10.30pm on Saturday close to a fast food van in the park, where thousands of music fans were gathered for the final night of 2021's Belsonic gigs.

The victim was assaulted by an unknown male who is thought to be around 17 years old. He is also described as being around five foot eight inches in height with a slim build, and has dark-blonde wavy hair.

The girl was helped afterwards by two other females who police wish to speak to as part of their investigation.

"We are very grateful to two girls who came to the assistance of the victim, and would ask them to get in touch as we believe they can assist with our enquiries," the PSNI spokesperson said.

“I am appealing to anyone with information to contact us on 101. Information can also be provided to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org."

South Belfast MP Claire Hanna described the incident as "distressing".

"Women and girls should not have to feel unsafe on a night out due to the impulses and actions of degenerates," she said.

"I hope this young woman is getting the support she needs and I commend those who assisted her after the assault. Anyone with relevant information should report it to the PSNI to ensure the person responsible can be caught and sentenced."
