Another eight people have died after contracting Covid-19, according to latest figures from the Department of Health.

It takes the total number of deaths recorded by the department to 2,525.

There were 1,165 new cases of the virus confirmed in the last 24-hour reporting period.

This morning there were 383 Covid-19 patients in hospital, with 31 in intensive care. Of these, 25 are on ventilators.

Hospitals in the north are over capacity by 94 beds.

A total of 2,511,208 vaccines have been administered.

The figures were released after Health Minister Robin Swann warned that winter pressures combined with the impact of Covid will create a struggle for the health service.

Meanwhile, in the Republic a further 1,355 cases of Covid-19 have been notified.

At 8am today, there were 286 Covid-positive patients in hospital, with 59 in intensive care.
