THE story of an inspirational Belfast model who defied the odds after she lost her leg to cancer has been made into a documentary.

The Girl With The Colourful Leg tells the story of Bernadette Hagans (25) who became the first contestant with a physical disability to reach the final of Miss Northern Ireland.

The documentary follows Bernadette’s journey from the beauty pageant boot camp to the gala final and her role as a disability and diversity champion inspiring and educating those she meets along the way.

The Girl With The Colourful Leg was yesterday among the new programme announced by BBC Northern Ireland as part of its autumn line-up, which includes an array of entertainment and intrigue in the run up to Christmas.

Also included is Farm To Feast: Best Menu Wins, a six-part series, which invites seven of Northern Ireland's most talented amateur cooks to move into a stately home in Fermanagh, where they live together and compete against each other to make culinary masterpieces.

Presented by Eamonn Holmes, the show also features Michelin star chef Danni Barry and food critic Joris Minne as judges.

Also featured in the schedule is Patrick Kielty: Northern Ireland, the Union And Me, which will see the comedian explore what the future holds for Northern Ireland, in an authored documentary for BBC One.

He will ask why a new trade border in the Irish Sea has led to violent protests, sparking fear among some of a return to conflict, nearly 25 years after the end of the Troubles, which claimed the life of Patrick's father Jack.

The schedule also includes the premiere of new BBC and Britbox police drama, Hope Street, which was filmed in the seaside town Donaghadee.

Set in the fictional town of Port Devine the series will focus on the local police department – and the mysterious arrival of English Detective Constable Alimah Kahn, the first Muslim police officer in the town’s history.

Other new programmes include Paula McIntyre’s Hamely Kitchen, Nothern Irish School Days, Barra’s Wild Days Out, Ulster By The Sea, A Stitch Through Time, Return To The Bonfire, and Crime NI.

Viewers will also welcome the return of The Blame Game, Tricked Out Tractors and There’s No Place Like Tyrone.

Eddie Doyle, Head of Content Commissioning, BBC NI said: "It has been another long and difficult year for audiences and we wanted to bring some much needed entertainment and escapism to the darker evenings.

"Our offering will hopefully make people laugh, reminisce and look at Northern Ireland from a different perspective."
