Hundreds took to the pads and paths of Ireland yesterday to remember former Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.

The main 2021 Chieftain’s Walk, with up to 200 participants, took place at Inch Island in Co Donegal, however, due to the Covid pandemic, many people chose to take part 'virtually' and stroll closer to home.

Thousands have joined the walk in the past, though last year's event in aid of the Martin McGuinness Peace Foundation was cancelled due to coronavirus.

Social media yesterday revealed walks taking place in Cork, Waterford, Wicklow, Tyrone, south Derry and many other locations across the country.

Mr McGuinness died in March 2017. The first Chieftain's Walk was held the following year on the anniversary of his death, the route taking walkers from Derry to Grianan of Aileach fort in Co Donegal.
