DUP MP Sammy Wilson has criticised the chairman of the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee at Westminster - comparing him to a nineteenth century colonial ruler.

Mr Wilson was speaking in the House of Commons yesterday as members debated the Northern Ireland (Ministers, Elections and Petitions of Concern) Bill.

He is unhappy that Simon Hoare supported a deal pledged by Secretary of State Brandon Lewis that would see Irish language legislation progressed through Westminster if the assembly cannot agree it by the autumn.

Mr Wilson told the commons that the bill being debated yesterday was meant to be about sustaining devolution and stop it being hijacked by any one party.

He said that at the same time the secretary of state was caving into threats.

He added that Mr Hoare had endorsed this approach.

"The kind of condescending, patronising attitude that we get from the chairman of the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee doesn't go down very well in Northern Ireland," Mr Wilson said.

"This kind of condescending attitude - if the natives can't get it together then let's do it here. He is talking like some nineteenth century colonial ruler.

"For any member of this house to suggest that the natives cannot work their way through these things, so we have to take things over occasionally - all it does is ensure that those who wish to be intransigent will continue to be intransigent because they know that they have the safety valve of running to the secretary of state's door, and he will sort it all out for them rather than them sorting it out for themselves."

On Twitter, politics professor Jon Tonge said: "Sammy Wilson almost sounding old school Shinner."
