Ousted DUP leader, Arlene Foster has taken to social media in an apparent effort to contrast her new-found carefreeness with the political nightmare being faced by Edwin Poots.

As Mr Poots struggled to retain control of the DUP yesterday, Ms Foster issued a tweet from a prominent Belfast restaurant which appeared to be a reference to Mr Poots.

The former first minister tweeted: “Just had a lovely lunch @DeanesAtQueens with a good friend. It’s great hospitality is open again – hope everyone is having a great day this lovely sunny afternoon. #ProudofNI.”

Mr Poots endured a nightmare leadership, including open rebellion from members, walk-outs and resignations before he quit as part leader last night, just 21 days after his election.

Mrs Foster’s apparent tongue-in-cheek tweet sparked a huge reaction, provoking close to 7,000 likes and hundreds of responses and re-tweets within minutes.

One response suggested the former first minister had enjoyed “Revenge Pie (best served cold)” for lunch while a second said “This wins the internet for today”. Another urged Ms Foster to try “not to laugh out loud”.

Alliance Party leader and Justice Minister Naomi Long responded: “I know you always hated Twitter, Arlene, but I have to say, you’re a natural. Enjoy a well earned break.”
