EMERGENCY crews were called to the M1 motorway near Belfast this morning after a caravan caught fire.

A call to the emergency services was made just before 7.20am.

Two fire appliances from Lisburn Fire Station and Cadogan Fire Station responded to the call to find a caravan on fire on the hard shoulder between Lisburn and the Applegreens service station, Belfast-bound.

A family travelling in the vehicle managed to escape.

A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said: "When firefighters arrived the caravan was well alight.

"They wore breathing apparatus and used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire," he said.

"The cause of the fire is believed to have been accidental ignition and the incident was dealt with by 7.57am".

A PSNI spokesman said no one was injured in the fire.

"The driver and his family got out of their vehicle safely," he said.

"Please remember to ensure all flammable items are securely stored in any vehicles/mobile homes before commencing your journey and take the time to check everything before you leave".
