DUP councillor Graham Warke has been elected the new mayor of Derry City and Strabane District council.

Mr Warke, from Newbuildings, was elected under the council's power-sharing agreement last night.

He takes over from outgoing SDLP mayor Brian Tierney.

Sinn Féin's Christopher Jackson was elected deputy mayor.

Mr Warke was originally co-opted onto the council to replace Gary Middleton when he became an assembly member.

He subsequently topped the poll for the Faughan district electoral area in the 2019 local government elections.

He said he looked forward to representing all of the council area to the best of his ability.

"I want to thank my colleagues for putting their trust in me to hold this position, especially as this is the Northern Ireland centenary year," he said.

Mr Jackson, who is from Derry's Top of the Hill area, said he was honoured to take up his new role. He said that with the post-Covid move towards recovery, there were opportunities, including Derry's City Deal.

"We need to embrace this and build a city of opportunity for young people with more jobs, more social and affordable homes and more money in the pockets of workers and families," he said.
