SUSPECTED cannabis with an estimated value of £900,000 has been recovered in a major operation in Co Down.

A large number of PSNI officers and Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs officials were involved in the cross-border operation on the A1 near Loughbrickland on Wednesday evening.

One man has been arrested.

Officers taking part in the operation, which involved several agencies, stopped vehicles on the main Belfast - Dublin road checking for drugs and illegal fuel.

While the majority of stopped vehicles were allowed to continue on their way it has emerged that eight drivers will be prosecuted or receive fixed penalty notices.
