'Crude but viable' device found in Bellaghy, Co Derry

AN explosive device described as police as "crude but viable" led to homes being evacuated in Bellaghy, Co Derry.

The security alert at Beatrice Villas in the town began shortly before 8.50am today following the report of a suspicious object located in the area.

Once verified it was taken away for further forensic examinations.

"A number of residents who were evacuated from their homes, have now returned and we would like to thank those affected by this alert for their patience during this proactive policing operation," a PSNI spokesman said.

"Inquiries are continuing and we would ask anyone with any information which could assist with our enquiries to call detectives in Cookstown on the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference number 349 21/05/21.
