A Northern Ireland railway inspector who has raised thousands of pounds for charity has won a new car and £30,000 after playing an online spot the ball competition.

Joseph Hollyoak, from Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, won a Land Rover Defender plus £30,000 in cash from online competitions company BOTB.

The 53-year-old, who fundraises for Macmillan Cancer Support along with work colleagues, said he was thrilled by his surprise win.

"That is absolutely brilliant," he said.

"Fantastic news."

The father-of-one said he has been playing the competition every week for over a year but never expected to win.

Mr Hollyoak said he would put the money towards his mortgage and then give some to his family.

"I know people think of all these things they’ll do with the money but all I want to do is pay off my bills and treat my family," he said.

"My daughter turned 21 last year and we didn’t get to celebrate because of Covid. I’d love to take her to New York along with my wife, Norma, when we’re allowed to travel again, too."

BOTB hands over the keys to two cars each week as well as prizes including holidays.

The company, listed on the stock market, was founded by William Hindmarch in 1999 and has given away cars worth more than £37 million so far.
