BELFAST Zoo is to reopen to the public on Friday following a relaxation of lockdown restrictions.

The popular visitor attraction will be open to to ticket-holders only.

The zoo will operate hourly sessions between 10am and 3pm until May 2. After May 2, sessions will run between 10am and 4pm.

The move comes after the Executive allowed outdoor attractions to reopen from Friday of last week.

Dunluce Castle in Co Antrim has already reopened.

The Gobbins cliff path in Islandmagee in Co Antrim reopened for tours today.

Several other historic sites, including Carrickfergus Castle in Co Antrim and Scrabo Tower in Co Down, will remain closed to the public in line with Executive guidance.

In the Republic, Dublin Zoo opened its doors today for the first time since New Year's Eve, along with other outdoor visitor attractions, sports pitches, golf courses and tennis courts.

The zoo is one of the most popular visitor attractions in the Republic with 1.3 million visitors in 2019, the last year before the pandemic.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin was one of the first visitors today.

On Thursday, he is due to announce a further relaxation of lockdown in May, along with expected changes in the summer.
