No deaths linked to Covid-19 but 79 new cases confirmed

There have been no further deaths linked to Covid-19 recorded in the last 24 hours, the Department of Health has confirmed.

It means the total number of deaths recorded since the pandemic began remains at 2,135.

A total of 79 new cases were recorded in the most recent reporting period. There have been 776 cases over past seven days, up from 713 in the previous week.

In hospitals, 69 patients have tested positive for coronavirus. There are eight patients in intensive care and five have been ventilated.

Bed occupancy in the north's hospitals is at 95 per cent. The Ulster Hospital in Dundonald is operating beyond capacity.

The seven day infection rate in the north per 100,000 is 41.2.

There are outbreaks in two care homes.

In the last 24 hours, 7,962 people received a Covid-19 vaccine. It brings the total number of vaccines administered to 1,137,331. Of these, 863,712 were first doses while 273,619 have been second doses.

Today's figures were released as it was announced the vaccine programme in Northern Ireland has some limited availability for those aged 35 to 39 to book a Covid-19 jab.

Appointments are mainly available at the vaccine centre at the SSE Arena and bookings will be available from 2.00pm today.  

This opportunity is in advance of opening the programme to the entire 35-39 age group by the end of April.

Meanwhile, no further deaths connected with Covid-19 have been reported in the Republic of Ireland. Another 403 cases were confirmed.

This morning, there were 183 Covid-positive patients in hospital, of which 50 were in intensive case.

As of April 17, 1,204,063 doses of the coronavirus vaccine have been administered, of which 852,189 were first doses, and 351,874 were second doses.
