FED up with dog dirt being left close to his home, a south Belfast resident has painted a warning to dog owners on the pavement outside his house.

Gary Benson used yellow line marking paint to write the message outside his home in the Woodbreda area demanding that owners pick up their dog's mess.

The warning states: 'Dirty dog owner - pick it up'.

Mr Benson said he had found dog dirt close to his driveway on a number of occasions in recent months and "I just thought enough is enough".

"I'm fed up with this happening, especially when my daughter nearly stands in it," he said.

"When it is right outside your house, it's disgusting.

"I've walked around the neighbourhood and see piles of it elsewhere too, it's a problem that needs addressed."

Mr Benson also posted an image of his message on an online neighbourhood site, nextdoor.co.uk.

"FAO dog owners in the Woodbreda area of Newtownbreda: this a polite notice that it is your legal and moral responsibility to clean up after your dog when walking it in a residential neighbourhood," he wrote.

"I’d really rather not have dog faeces left at the end of my driveway, especially with a young daughter at home.

"Please return to clear up your dog’s mess and we can all be friends again. Next time CCTV footage will be passed to the council dog warden."

Mr Benson last night said while most people picked up after their dog, a "small minority don't".

"There's a lot of people out walking with dogs and I'd say 90 per cent are responsible," he said.

"But then there's a small minority of dog owners who don't bother for no reason at all. I want people to be aware this is happening.

"I'm going to leave the message on the pavement for a day or two and hopefully it makes a difference."
