PRESIDENT Michael D Higgins will appear on The Late Late Show this weekend to mark his 80th birthday.

To celebrate the milestone occasion, he will be joined by host Ryan Tubridy at Áras an Uachtaráin for what has been billed as "a very special interview" on the RTÉ One programme.

President Higgins turns 80 on Sunday.

It is expected he will discuss his life journey during the interview on Friday night.

In a message posted on Twitter, RTÉ said: "Next weekend marks President Michael D Higgins' 80th birthday and Ryan will be conducting a very special interview with him from Áras an Uachtaráin for Friday night's LateLate Show".

Meanwhile, Belfast crooner Van Morrison will perform a rendition of 'Burning Good' for President Higgins in a TG4 programme due to be broadcast on his 80th birthday.

The singer will also send his birthday greetings to the president on the programme, in his first Irish televised performance in 26 years.

The one-hour show, 'Ómós - Michael D @ 80', will be aired on the Irish language channel on Sunday and will showcase a range of Ireland's finest poets, musicians, playwrights and dancers.

Nigerian born, Tullamore raised Tolü Makay will perform her song Don't Let Go with her four-piece band, from Rathfarnham Castle in Dublin.

There will also be interviews with former president Mary Robinson, playwright and director Darach Mac Con Iomaire and senator and barrister Ivana Bacik.

They will discuss the president's love of music, dance, poetry, language, song, theatre and his support for the marginalised in society.
