A 35-year-old man has been fined £400 for two breaches of Covid-19 regulations.

Ruarai Saunders of Claremont House in Derry admitted breaching regulations on December 20 and 31 as well as a charge of resisting police on December 20.

Derry magistrates' court heard that police were called to a report of a breach of Covid regulations on December 20.

They found Saunders and several other people and spoke to them. When officers went to arrest Saunders he pushed one.

The court also heard that on December 31 police again received a report of a breach and went to Saunders' address where they found six people.

The court was told that Saunders had already received fines totalling £440 for Covid breaches.

Deputy District Judge Sean O'Hare asked Saunders did he not understand what he was not allowed to do - such as gathering with others or attending a funeral.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said regulations had changed quite a lot over Christmas. Some things were permitted, then banned, then permitted, he said.

He added that Saunders had underlying health conditions.

The defendant was fined £400, given a two month prison sentence suspended for 18 months and a conditional discharge.
