FIRST Minister Arlene Foster briefly spoke as Gaeilge today as she answered an assembly question on the Irish language.

The DUP leader was responding to Lagan Valley independent MLA Trevor Lunn, who enquired whether Irish language legislation would be enacted before the end of the current mandate.

Mrs Foster said the legislation was "part of package on identity and cultural pieces" that it was hoped could be brought forward by May next year.

"I'm almost tempted to say sin é (meaning 'that's it'), but maybe not," she concluded.

It is not the first time the DUP leader has spoken Irish.

She used the same expression at a Stormont economy committee in 2014 and marked the end of her 2017 visit to Our Lady's Grammar School in Newry with "go raibh maith agat".
