POLICE have said a security alert, that resulted in staff being evicted from Belfast City council offices, was "nothing untoward".

Two council's offices were evacuated after reports of a suspicious object being located at Adelaide Street in the city centre.

Employees were asked to leave all buildings in the area as Ammunition Technical Officers and a PSNI search team attended the scene.

SDLP Councillor Seamas de Faoite on social media said: "Already this week the people who work in these buildings have been helping me to get graffiti cleaned up, illegal dumping removed, protection orders placed on trees and much more and it's only Tuesday.

"Hope this is nothing untoward and my solidarity is with the staff evacuated."

However following an extensive search operation lasting several hours the PSNI said: "Police attended a report of a suspicious object located in the area, which has been declared as nothing untoward."

Meanwhile, Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey condemned those responsible for bomb alerts at party offices in west Belfast.

He said the PSNI contacted Sinn Féin to say they received a report that an explosive device may have been thrown at a party office.

"This report is very concerning and I condemn those responsible.

"They have nothing to offer society and they bring nothing but disruption to the local area.

"This is an attack on the entire community and an attempt to undermine democracy but it will not succeed.

"Sinn Féin will not be deterred by these types of incidents and will continue to serve the entire community."

Chief Inspector Peter Brannigan said: "Information was received to suggest devices may have been thrown at an office on Falls Road, Belfast and police are seeking to establish the veracity of this information. The local community is asked to be vigilant and report anything out of the ordinary to police."
