LINEN Hall Library in Belfast is shining "light during the darkness" with events to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

A virtual exhibition began yesterday as "a way of remembering and reflecting on a tragic moment in human history".

Items such as photographs or pieces of memorabilia, each with its own unique story relating to the Holocaust, will be posted on the library’s social media channels every day.

The Light During the Darkness: Remembering the Holocaust exhibition, organised in partnership with Conflict Textiles, runs until February 1.

To mark Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27, a transnational panel of contributors will also relay personal stories about Holocaust-related family memorabilia.

Award-winning author and poet Marjorie Agosín, originally from Chile, will be among the contributors to join the online event from the United States.

Others will be contributing from Argentina, Germany and Northern Ireland.

Linen Hall director Julie Andrews said: "As an institution that holds archives from all religious, political and cultural persuasions, the Linen Hall is proud to support Holocaust Memorial Day 2021 as a way of remembering and reflecting on a tragic moment in human history".

Conflict Textiles curator Roberta Bacic said: "In times of darkness, some bright light always squeezes through. So do memories.

"As we mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2021, we value our contributors from three different continents who will bring to life people and memorabilia that bare witness to those who suffered in different ways and/or resisted the Nazi regime."
