FINES totalling almost £5,000 have been handed out by police after they visited a house party in north Belfast.

The PSNI said it attended a property at Dunmore Mews just after 9.30pm on Monday after receiving a report of a large gathering of people.

Officers found adults and children in the property.

Police say 24 Cov4 £200 fines, totalling £4,800, and two prohibition notices were issued "in respect of a house party".

Assistant Chief Constable Alan Todd said: "So many people have stepped up to take personal responsibility and follow the regulations, and are continuing to make sacrifices to slow the spread of this deadly virus.

"Therefore, it is really disappointing to see there are still people not taking the risk of this virus seriously and these type of gatherings, which are in breach of the regulations, are still happening despite this global health crisis.

"People who engage in this type of reckless behaviour at this time are putting themselves and others at risk."

Mr Todd warned that the PSNI will continue to take enforcement action

"Where people do not follow the health protection regulations, our approach will remain the same we will engage with people first explaining the guidance and the law and encourage people to do the right thing," he said.

"However, where we are left with no choice but to enforce, we will take this measure in order to protect the most vulnerable members of our communities and help protect our NHS."
