IT'S Co Tyrone's very own version of the famous Rockefeller Christmas tree in New York... but this local spruce has ensured hundreds of children receive a gift this year.

The 35ft Roceweller Giving Tree, located in the car park of the Rocwell Natural Mineral Company high in the Sperrins near Pomeroy, may not be as tall as its 75ft American counterpart but it has certainly captured the community's attention.

Hundreds of toys have been donated along with £1,700 for the Cash for Kids Mission Christmas annual appeal.

Company owner Brian Quinn, who delivered the toys to the charity on Friday, said he was delighted at the response.

"This was our first year doing it but we thought, with the year that's in it, people needed some extra help," he said.

"We had the tree in our forest and a couple of guys that work in the yard helped me cut it down and erect it.

"We had to put the lights on at night time but it was all done in two days."

The premises were left open to 9pm every night so people could see the tree when it was lit up and at its best.

They also had the option to select a tag - each labelled with an age group, and indicating whether the gift was for a girl or a boy.

"Everything was outside and socially distanced. People were so generous. Some bought toys at £40 or £50, others gave online and we had businesses making donations as well," Mr Quinn said.

"Families came with their children and to see their faces looking up at the lights was fantastic.

"It's the simple things too. We have a water fountain and the children thought that was great."

The family-owned business, which was established 30 years ago, is hoping to make its Roceweller initiative an annual event.

And although the appeal has ended, Mr Quinn said people are still welcome to go along over the holiday period and view the tree.

Meanwhile, the Cash for Kids appeal has ensured more than 9,000 children across Northern Ireland will receive a gift this year.
