JOHN McAreavey and his wife Tara are celebrating the birth of their first child.

Mr McAreavey posted a photograph of them on social media cradling their newborn son, which he said they had named James.

In a caption accompanying the picture, he simply wrote: "Let the adventures begin James".

The news comes just days after Mr McAreavey vowed to keep fighting for justice after police in Mauritius officially closed investigations into the murder of his late wife Michaela.

He said he would "continue to request engagement from the Mauritian authorities and continue to fight for justice for Michaela".

Mr McAreavey announced in September that he and his wife Tara, an accountant from Maynooth, Co Kildare, were expecting their first baby as they posted images from a trip to Donegal on social media.

The Co Down man wrote at the time: "Great few days exploring Donegal with Tara and bump".

They couple married n September 2016, five years after Mr McAreavey was left heartbroken by the murder of Michaela, daughter of Tyrone GAA manager Mickey Harte, on their honeymoon in Mauritius.

The 27-year-old school teacher from Ballygawley was found dead in the bathroom of their suite at the five-star Legends hotel in the resort of Grand Gaube in January 2011.
