NORTHERN Ireland’s segregated population must be transformed if true equality is to be achieved, a Community Relations Council member has said.

Dympna McGlade was speaking in a discussion organised by the John and Pat Hume Foundation.

A Shared Home Place – the Unfinished Business of Reconciliation, released on the Foundation’s YouTube channel yesterday, featured Ms McGlade, Ulster University’s Duncan Morrow and community relations worker, Eileen Weir. The discussion was chaired by Foundation member and former PUP leader, Dawn Purvis.

The foundation was established to preserve, nurture and develop the legacy of the former SDLP leader, who died in August, as well as that of his wife, Pat.

Ms McGlade told the discussion that it sometimes felt that little or no progress was being made in addressing the legacy of the past and the segregation of Northern Irish society.

“The hard work of many, the huge investment and good will to support peace and reconciliation in NI must be harnessed and taken to the next level. This means addressing inequality by putting focused attention on segregation and transforming segregated areas into safe, welcoming and vibrant places,” she said.
