A bad night at the US presidential election polls for 'West Clare Hotelier' and 'South Ayrshire Golf Club Owner'

LOCAL papers have been having some fun at their own expense with their coverage of the US presidential election.

Often accused of being parochial for focussing on how world events affect their small areas, they traditionally only cover international breaking news if it involves someone living in same town or county as its readers.

Donald Trump's myriad business interests have given a chance for some mischievous headlines about his defeat to Joe Biden.

First out of the blocks was Clare Echo which published an article with the headline: `West Clare Hotelier Loses Out in US Presidential election'.

Not to be outdone, the Ayrshire Daily News presented readers with `South Ayrshire Golf Club Owner Loses 2020 Presidential Election', going on to explain in the story: "Donald Trump, a South Ayrshire golf club owner has lost the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden, after running again to be re-elected for a second presidential term."

It follows a trend started during the last election when the Scottish paper had a similar headline, but this time with the `South Ayrshire Golf Club Owner Wins 2016 Presidential Election' and The Ellion Times: `Aberdeenshire Business Owner Wins Presidential Election', explaining "Donald Trump, owner of Trump International Golf Links at Balmedie, has been elected as the next President of the USA".
