LAST month was the sunniest October for 12 years, according to the Armagh Observatory.

It was also slightly wetter than usual, but with roughly average temperature.

The mean temperature was just over 10 degrees Celsius, with the warmest day being October 14 when it hit 17 degrees.

The observatory, which has been recording the weather at Armagh since 1795, said there was a total of 115.6 hours of strong sunshine, making it much sunnier than average.

The sunniest day was the 2nd, with 10 hours of strong sunshine.

The coldest day was October 17 when it was 9.5 degrees Celsius and the coldest night, on October 2, saw a temperature of 1.4 degrees.

There were eight ground frosts during the month, when grass minimum temperatures were zero degrees or lower, but no air frosts.

Total precipitation was 87.7 mm (3.45 inches), with the month being nine per cent wetter than the long-term average for October.

But following a series of five drier than average Octobers, this was the wettest October at Armagh for six years.

There was just one day - October 24 - with no measurable rainfall at all.

Meanwhile, a flock of 10 geese was recorded flying south-east over the observatory on October 8 and a flock of 11 geese at roughly the same time flying in the same direction on the 22nd.
