Co Down man sent for trial in connection with Kilkeel assault

A Co Down man has been sent for trial in connection with an assault in Kilkeel last year.

Gary Chambers (35) of Sabbath Hill, Ballymartin appeared at a preliminary inquiry at Newry Magistrates Court via video link.

He is charged with grievous bodily harm, disorderly behaviour, attempted criminal damage and robbery on July 14 2019.

The preliminary enquiry (PE) is the final stage in court proceedings to determine whether there is a case to answer before being sent for trial.

The charges relate to a serious assault on Paschal Morgan (48) on Greencastle Road in Kilkeel last year.

The defendant is also alleged to have robbed Mr Morgan of a wallet containing €450, £150 and various bank cards. He is further accused of damaging gates and doors at the Kilmorey Arms Hotel.

There was no objection to the PE from the accused today, who stated that he understood the charges against him.

District Judge Eamonn King said he was satisfied that there was a case to answer with no contrary submissions from defence.

No witnesses or evidence was brought forward by the defendant at this stage and he was released on continuing bail.
