Another person has died after testing positive for coronavirus, the Department of Health has said.

It brings the total number of deaths since the pandemic began to 568.

In the past 24 hours, 78 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded, meaning 599 people have tested positive in the past week.

The overall number of cases has now passed 8,000 and stands at 8,035.

In hospitals, 26 patients have tested positive for coronavirus, with two people on ventilation in intensive care.

In care homes there are 22 confirmed outbreaks of the virus and a further eight suspected outbreaks.

Health Minister Robin Swann said he would today be asking fellow ministers to tighten Covid-19 restrictions during an "important" Executive meeting.

He said decisions would be required on whether it would apply to Northern Ireland as a whole or to more localised areas, where there are higher rates of the virus.

It came after Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill earlier said it was inevitable local lockdowns will be imposed to help prevent the spread of the virus.
