THE Gobbins coastal path in Co Antrim reopened to the public yesterday for the first time since the Covid-19 lockdown.

The tourist attraction at Islandmagee, near Whitehead, has remained closed since March.

But visitors were once again braving the cliff walk yesterday as guides brought people along narrow paths, up stairways carved into the cliff face and through under-sea tunnels.

Measures have been put in place at the attraction in a bid to maintain hygiene standards and social distancing in line with coronavius guidelines.

All tours have to pre-booked, with visitors asked to use contactless payment methods where possible and adhere to a one-way system.

Mid and East Antrim mayor Peter Johnston yesterday welcomed visitors to the reopened coastal path and was among the first to take a tour.

"It is my absolute pleasure to be here today and to be able to welcome visitors back to what can only be described as one of the most unforgettable days out you will ever have in your lifetime," he said.

"The Gobbins coastal path is more than a walk, it is an experience like no other and is just one of the many beautiful tourist attractions within the borough that are open and ready to welcome visitors again.

"This marks another major step forward for Mid and East Antrim borough council in our ongoing commitment to the local tourism industry and the wider economy and I am delighted to see so many back here today."

Guided tours of the Gobbins Coastal Path, which are limited to a maximum of 10 per group, take place from 9am to 3pm.
