A burglar who targeted the same property in west Belfast three times in a month has been jailed.

Martin Halpin (34) was handed a two-year sentence, divided equally between custody and licence, for four offences last November.

With an address as Maghaberry prison, he appeared at the remote hearing at Belfast Crown Court today via a videolink.

Crown barrister David Russell said Halpin was made the subject of a combination order at the same court on November 18 last year - but two days later committed a burglary at Fruithill Park in Belfast.

Police were called to the area in the early hours and he was seen hiding in front of a Range Rover.

Officers searched him and located the keys to the vehicle, which had been stolen from the porch of the property it was parked outside.

Also found was a pair of trainers that had been in the porch.

Halpin later admitted this burglary and a further three offences at another property that month.

At 11.30pm on November 16, a resident of St Meryl Park was in his garden shed when Halpin opened the door.

The resident removed Halpin from the garden but he returned the following day and stole a bicycle, with the theft filmed on a phone by a neighbour.

Just after midnight on November 29, he went back for a third time and was detained by residents.

Police were told he had been seen in the back garden trying to gain access to the shed.

A defence lawyer said Halpin had long-standing drug and alcohol issues which have been the catalyst for his offending and which he has acknowledged he needs to address.
