When Derry Girls met Normal People
DERRY Girls writer Lisa McKee is a "huge, huge fan" of her new leading man - Normal People's Paul Mescal.
McKee said she and husband, writer and actor Tobias Beer, managed to secure the 24-year-old actor for their Virgin Media One project `The Deceived' before his career exploded with the BBC One lockdown sensation.
"We were his second TV job, and we were just incredibly lucky to get him, because although Normal People hadn't come out at that stage there was already a definite buzz about Paul," she said on The Ray D'Arcy Show on RTÉ Radio 1.
"It was obvious how talented he was. We were incredibly lucky to get him for the show.
"It's really exciting now - I'm a huge, huge fan of Normal People. It's amazing."
The four-part crime thriller, filmed in Belfast follows Ophelia (Emily Reid), a student who falls for her `timelessly attractive and charismatic, but married college lecturer, Dr Michael Callaghan', played by Emmet J Scanlan who is himself known for `Peaky Blinders' and `The Fall'.
As well as Mescal, it features Eleanor Methven of `Derry Girls' and `Little Women' and veteran Belfast actor Ian McElhinney, most recently featured in `Game of Thrones' and `Derry Girls'.
McKee also confirmed she would "like to do" a film version of her international hit featuring the four school girls and "wee English fella".
"For a while I questioned whether it would work but now an idea is starting to vaguely form in my head. After series three, I'll think about that a bit more."
