Sinn Féin has condemned a death threat against Belfast City Council official Nigel Grimshaw.
Mr Grimshaw was threatened amid an ongoing row over the council's handling of IRA veteran Bobby Storey's cremation at Roselawn cemetery in east Belfast last week.
Mr Grimshaw, the council's strategic director, and council chief executive Suzanne Wylie have reportedly threatened to resign if an external investigation was ordered into the council's handling of the cremation.
The senior officials took the unprecedented step this week of personally apologising "wholeheartedly and unreservedly" to eight families who were not allowed to hold services at the council's Roselawn crematorium on the same day as Mr Storey's cremation.
The council has said it will refund cremation fees to the eight families affected and help to facilitate a memorial service at a later date.
Sinn Féin councillor Ciaran Beattie said the threat against Mr Grimshaw, a former PSNI area commander, was "abhorrent".
"Those responsible for this threat have nothing to offer society," he said.
"This threat comes after Nigel Grimshaw has been the subject of much inaccurate, ill-informed and irresponsible public commentary in recent days.
"Everyone should be free to go about their business free from fear of threats and intimidation.
“Anyone with any information on those responsible for this despicable and cowardly threat should bring it to the PSNI.”
