NOAM Chomsky will be among online highlights at this year's Féile an Phobail.

The festival, which normally draws huge crowds to a wide range of events in west Belfast, is taking place virtually next month due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year's programme includes a series of concerts, debates and discussions, theatre, visual arts, workshops and community events.

The line-up includes American academic and political activist Noam Chomsky, who will give his analysis of a post-Covid society, as well as former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis and Irish economist David McWilliams.

US Congressman Richie Neal, Chair of Congressional Friends of Ireland, will also take part in a `In Conversation' event.

There will also be a Féile Dance Legends event with leading DJs and a concert from Clonard Monastery featuring Bernadette Morris, Gráinne Holland and Rioghnach Connolly.

Kevin Gamble, Féile an Phobail director, said there are more than 100 online events taking place from July 30 until August 9.

"Since our first féile in 1988, we have always found a way of putting on our annual August féile, the biggest community arts festival in Ireland," he said.

"This August, due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Féile an Phobail took the decision to make several important changes.

"Our August festival programme is going ahead in the form of a ‘virtual’ féile where you can relax safely at home and still enjoy what féile has to offer".
