A charity has set up a virtual cafe to bring together those affected by brain injury during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Headway’s ABI (acquired brain injury) Network hopes the initiative will help people to "remain connected with one another".

The charity is providing the virtual safe space for brain injury survivors and their carers in the Southern Trust area where people will come together to chat, ease feelings of isolation and enjoy a cuppa.

Pamela Bell, the charity’s services co-ordinator, is behind the launch.

"One of the main obstacles that individuals and families whose lives have been affected by brain injury have encountered has been social isolation," she said.

"More than ever we have been impacted by this and it is vital that we remain connected with one another.

"This new virtual cafe programme will act as a catalyst in breaking down these social barriers."

The virtual cafe sessions will take place once a month on Zoom, starting on Monday and are open to everyone affected by brain injury in the Southern Trust area.

Michelle Major, a motivational speaker with The Sunshine Project, is joining the first session to "help uplift and inspire the group at this difficult time".

Ms Bell added: "These sessions will create an opportunity where people have a safe place to talk about anything and everything related to brain injury.

"They’ll be able to share ideas and experiences with others who have been affected by the devastating consequences of brain injury."
