THE Presbyterian Church is the latest to issue guidance to its congregations ahead of places of worship being allowed to reopen with the easing of Covid-19 restrictions in the Republic on June 29.

No date has yet been given for churches in Northern Ireland to resume public worship.

The Church of Ireland and the Catholic Church both published guidance to their parishes last week.

In its Guidelines for Getting Ready to Gather Again, the Presbyterian Church sets out a number of practical issues for its congregations to consider, including preparing buildings and the practicalities that may surround socially-distanced worship.

Rev Trevor Gribben, Clerk to the General Assembly, said churches needed to be careful and responsible in how they prepared for "the return of worship services and other aspects of church life".

"Each congregation's circumstances will be different and they will come to a variety of decisions about what activities to recommence, and how quickly this can happen," he said.

"It is important that churches continue to pay attention to guidance issued by the Northern Ireland Executive and the government in the Republic of Ireland along with the relevant statutory agencies."

Some members may be anxious about returning to church, said Mr Gribben, meaning that "for a time it may be necessary to operate a mixture of digital and socially distanced face-to-face gatherings".

The guidance had been built around the word 'safe': sticking to the rules; assessing the risks; fostering good routines; and encouraging individual responsibility.

"The simple instruction to suspend all activities was perhaps more straightforward to follow and implement than the gradual return to church life will be," said Mr Gribben.

"However meeting together with brothers and sisters in Christ is central to Christian life and a primary expression of church as the family of God, and we look forward to having the opportunity to do so once again."
