A SERVING police officer is under investigation over an alleged plot to kill the husband of a woman he was having a relationship with.

The Irish News understands the officer, aged 38, who was based at Woodbourne Police Station in west Belfast, was arrested and questioned last Thursday on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder.

A 40-year-old woman was also arrested in the Lisburn area and questioned about the alleged plot.

It is believed the woman's partner made a complaint to police after discovering messages between the pair in which they discussed plans to kill him.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "Detectives arrested two people – a man aged 38 and a woman aged 40 years old – on suspicion of conspiracy to murder in the Lisburn area on Thursday, May 28.

"Both have since been released on bail, pending further enquiries.

"There is no further information at this time."

It is understood that the officer has not returned to work since the allegation was made and his duty status is currently under consideration.
