The SDLP has selected Cara Hunter as the new assembly member for East Derry, following the death of John Dallat.

Ms Hunter is the Deputy Mayor of Derry and Strabane District Council and the SDLP's Mental Health spokeswoman.

Mr Dallat, who was 73, died on May 5 following a long battle with cancer.

A former school teacher, he served as an SDLP representative since 1977, first as councillor in Coleraine and later as an assembly member for East Derry. He was also a former deputy speaker of the assembly.

Speaking about her new role, Ms Hunter said it was an "incredible honour" to be selected and "follow in the footsteps of someone like John Dallat".

"John dedicated his life to public service and I know just how much he loved representing people here," she said.

"I hope that I can continue that tradition of being a champion for everyone in East Derry."
