Former Secretary of State Julian Smith is to give evidence to a Westminster committee on the New Decade, New Approach agreement that he helped negotiate during his time in Northern Ireland.

The MP for Skipton and Ripon will appear before the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee today to give his opinion on the future sustainability of the Stormont assembly.

Mr Smith was sacked in Boris Johnson's post-Brexit reshuffle after just 204 days in the role.

Despite this he made a huge impact and was described as the most popular Northern Ireland Secretary since Labour's Mo Mowlam. He fast tracked legislation that allowed victims of historical child abuse to receive compensation payments.

As the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland when the agreement was signed, Mr Smith worked closely with Tánaiste Simon Coveney during the negotiations to restore devolution.

The committee is expected to question Mr Smith about his approach and reflections on the negotiations and the effect of the deal on the future sustainability of Northern Ireland’s devolved institutions.

He will also be asked about the UK government's funding commitments in the deal document that were later rolled back on.
