A Lisburn man accused of stabbing a drinking partner has been refused bail.

Appearing at the city's magistrate's court via videolink from police custody, 28-year-old Lee Ferguson confirmed that he understood the three charges.

Ferguson, from Graham Gardens, is charged with wounding his friend with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, possessing a knife with intent to wound, and causing criminal damage to a TV.

A detective constable said police were objecting to bail.

He said Ferguson and the complainant had been drinking together most of last Sunday when there was a dispute over money and the defendant “squared up” to him at around 11.30pm.

“The allegation is that he went to the kitchen and got a large silver kitchen knife at which point he attacks him."

The officer said the victim was left with lacerations to his hand, arm, shoulder and lower back.

The court also heard that a neighbour saw Ferguson leaving the flat on Beechland Drive “in possession of a large knife”.

Ferguson told police he was the one attacked and has a injury to his hand, which defence solicitor Keith Gamble submitted was consistent with him “grabbing the blade rather than the hilt”.

The officer confirmed the complainant had also been arrested but while he was freed on police bail pending further enquiries, Ferguson was charged.

“This is clearly a case that has triable issues and one where it’s difficult to separate out why one man would be treated differently than the other when they have made accusations against each other,” submitted Mr Gamble.

However, District Judge Amanda Henderson refused bail and adjourned his case to June 1.
