A GRAMMAR schools for girls has donated the entirety of its canteen stock to a food bank.

Strathearn School in east Belfast cleared its stores to donate a wide range of food and beverages to Bangor Foodbank and Community Support.

It will now be distributed to some of the most vulnerable and in need in the community.

Strathearn is one a of several Belfast schools that remains open to support children of key workers.

Since the lockdown began, the school has also donated personal protective equipment, with its technology department designing and producing face shields for ophthalmology departments in Belfast's Ulster and Royal Victoria Hospitals.

Usually catering for 775 girls at its senior school and 150 girls at its preparatory department, Penrhyn, Strathearn's `Miskelly Deli' provides a varied menu of healthy, nutritious and balanced of dishes each day using ingredients purchased from local suppliers.

"Since our deli has been closed for a number of weeks now, our stores were fully stocked with several weeks' worth of a wide range of non-perishable items," Principal Nicola Connery said.

"As an outward-looking and community-focussed school, we are committed to doing anything we can to support those in need around us as the Covid-19 continues to evolve and wanted these food supplies to go to those in need at this time.

"We are pleased that these items will make even a small difference to dozens of families during these unprecedented times."
