A 49-year-old man was arrested during a police operation targeting dissident republican activity in Derry.

Police said the man was arrested under the Terrorism Act during two planned searches conducted by the PSNI’s Terrorism Investigation Unit yesterday.

The 49-year-old is being questioned at the PSNI’s Musgrave serious crime suite.

PSNI spokesman, Detective Chief Inspector Paul Rowland said a number of items were also seized and removed during yesterday’s searches.

The PSNI spokesman said: “Today’s search demonstrates that we will continue to work with our communities to disrupt the activities of this small group of people who are intent on using violence. Our priority will always be to protect communities and keep people safe from harm.

“There is no place for this type of activity and the vast majority of people in our communities went to live in a peaceful society.”

Detective Chief Inspector Rowland appealed to anyone with information about violent dissident republican activity to contact police.
