POLICE have said a suspected firearm and ammunition were recovered in Co Tyrone as part of an investigation into dissident republican activity.

Detectives from the PSNI’s Terrorism Investigation Unit, with support from Tactical Support Group colleagues, made the find in a planned search in the Spout Road area of Strabane on Saturday.

Both items were taken away for forensic examination.

Detective Inspector Anthony Kelly said the search "demonstrates that we will continue to work with our communities to disrupt the activities of this small group of people who are intent on using violence".

He added: "There is no place for this type of activity and the vast majority of people in our communities want to live in a peaceful society."

Anyone with information was asked to contact police on 101 or phone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
