AROUND 50,000 MOT tests have been cancelled in Northern Ireland amid the ongoing disruption at test centres.

The Department for Infrastructure yesterday said more than 54,000 tests have been carried out since problems arose in January when cracks were found on lifts at many test centres.

But it confirmed that "cancellations to date are circa 50,000" since January 21.

Testing of cars and light vehicles was suspended after cracks were found in 48 out of 55 vehicle lifts at test centres. Exemption certificates have been issued to vehicle owners who have had their MOT appointments cancelled.

All 15 test centres are now open but not yet operating at full capacity.
